English Essay by Brian Southwick
10 Cycling ネイティブスピーカー(ALT)によるREADING

In my last essay I wrote about one of my hobbies, reading.  In this essay I will introduce another hobby, cycling.
I have enjoyed cycling since I was a child.  When I was five years old, my parents gave me my first bicycle.   It made me very happy, and I still remember its bright red color.  When I was older, my parents gave me a larger bicycle, and in junior high school I was a member of my hometown’s bicycle club.  I had a lot of fun riding my bike through the Louisiana countryside with the other club members.
Seven years ago, I moved to Niigata.  I have enjoyed riding my bike through the Niigata countryside since then.  I have been to Kamo, Muramatsu, Uonuma, Yahiko, and Aga by bike.  Two years ago, my son Thomas and I went cycling on Sado Island.  We had a lot of fun riding our bikes and camping by the sea.
I like cycling because I can see many things around me.  For example, I can enjoy the trees and flowers by the road.  I can also listen to the birds, and sometimes I can see interesting animals.  Last month I rode my bike to Mt. Kakuda, and I saw an Ezo squirrel crossing the road.
I also enjoy cycling in Niigata City.  I can explore the narrow streets in Furumachi and Honcho and discover many interesting shops.  If you have a bicycle, why don’t you explore Niigata City?
