Michio Hoshino was a famous Japanese photographer who won awards for his pictures of nature.  He was born in Chiba on September 27, 1952.   Michio was interested in adventure as a teenager.  Just before his seventeenth birthday, he hitchhiked alone through Mexico, the United States, and Canada for two months during the summer.
When Michio was twenty years old and a student at Keio University, he bought a book of pictures taken in Alaska.  The pictures were beautiful, and Michio became interested in the nature of Alaska.  He was especially moved by some pictures that were taken of Shishmaref, a small Eskimo village on a tiny Alaskan island.
Michio wanted to go to the village, so he wrote a letter to the mayor.  The mayor wrote to Michio and invited him to visit.  In the summer of 1973, Michio spent three months in Shishmaref with an Eskimo family.  During his homestay, he helped the people fish, and he took many pictures. The visit changed his life.

After he graduated from Keio, Michio worked as an assistant for a professional photographer.  He wanted to become a photographer, too, and he had to learn many things.  Two years later, Michio quit his job.  He decided to enter the University of Alaska to study about animals.
Michio entered the university, and he continued to take pictures.
He became quite busy taking pictures, so he decided to become a full-time photographer.  Michio spent almost twenty years in Alaska, photographing nature and meeting people who loved nature.  People were impressed by his work, and he won the Kimura Ihei Prize for photography in 1990.

“Why do we always turn to nature? Michio once said.  Probably because we want to understand our life.  I feel we can do soby looking at wild bears or birds.”  In 1996 Michio went to Kamchatka, Russia, to take pictures of bears.  He was killed by a bear on August 8 of that year.
